Rural housing 'becoming more unaffordable'

People looking to get on the housing ladder in rural areas of the UK are set to face a difficult task in the near future.

That is according to Jason Beedell, head of research at Smiths Gore, who feels that the access to local housing in such regions for prospective first-time buyers remains "terrible" in the aftermath of the global economic downturn.

Mr Beedell explained the cost-effectiveness of homes in the countryside is "only getting worse", meaning the government needs to implement more "innovative thinking" in order to kick-start the sector once again.

"Rural areas, including market towns, are becoming less and less affordable," he noted.

Earlier this week (December 20th), Savills revealed it expects the average value of farmland will go up by 36 per cent over the duration of the next five years.

And Mr Beedell indicated this trend will only serve to make the affordability issue for young families even tougher. ADNFCR-2353-ID-801247319-ADNFCR
