Same-sex marriages 'should be permitted'
Posted by Mark Cunningham
Current legislation concerning the rights of same-sex couples is unfair, it has been suggested.
Writing in the Independent, gay rights activist Peter Tatchell said the government should implement laws that permit gay civil marriage ceremonies to take place.
He was making his comments ahead of an event scheduled to take place tonight (June 16th) during which gay community leaders will be hosted for discussions at Downing Street.
Mr Tachell - who is a co-founder of action group OutRage! - claimed there is strong public support for a change in the law and cited figures from the Times, which indicated that 61 per cent of UK citizens believe gay couples should be able to get married in a registry office.
He added: "We are left with a prime minister and a deputy who talk gay rights but who are unwilling to abolish the one remaining law that discriminates against lesbian and gay people."
