Selling a car can result in motorists losing up to £500 through poor vehicle condition, no service history and lack of full documentation.

This is according to research from Manheim Auctions, which found that one in ten drivers are not preparing their automobiles prior to putting them on the market.

For example, cracked headlights can see between £75 and £150 taken off the value of the model, while a damaged windscreen can have an impact of between £100 and £300.

What's more, inadequate alloy wheels could result in up to £150 per wheel taken off the final price tag.

Client services and marketing director with the company Craig Mailey noted that it is "imperative" people do all they can to maximise their car's worth.

"Ensuring a car is clean and in the best condition possible will go a long way to getting the best resale price," he continued.

This comes after the Office of Fair Trading issued guidance for those buying used vehicles, noting that complaints in this regard have climbed by around 18 per cent in the last year.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800116555-ADNFCR
