Sensitive health issues 'not raised with consumers'

Consumers may not be receiving the help they require from their GPs, with research revealing that many are sweeping issues such as smoking, obesity and alcohol misuse under the carpet for fear of upsetting them.

According to Aviva's Health of the Workplace study, 41 per cent of personal doctors shy away from bringing up these matters, with personal hygiene topping the list of topics such professionals do not wish to discuss - 59 per cent are apparently unprepared to tackle it.

Exacerbating this problem is the fact that patients appear to demonstrate a lack of knowledge regarding their health and lifestyle, with 68 per cent unaware of their blood pressure levels and 22 per cent entirely unsure of what a good body mass index would be.

This comes after doctors reported Stoke-on-Trent Primary Care Trust to government health secretary Andrew Lansley after 2,000 patients were allocated to a GP surgery three miles from their homes, in spite of the fact there were a dozen other practices closer by, the Sentinel reports.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800241034-ADNFCR
