Many couples in the UK who are no longer together have had to continue cohabiting in order to make ends meet.

This is according to research by housing charity Shelter, which was released - the organisation points out - in the week that is the most popular for couples to launch separation and divorce proceedings.

According to Shelter, nearly one in four adults recently polled revealed either they or someone they know have had to remain in the same residence as a former partner because they could not cover the cost of moving elsewhere.

Its director of policy and campaigns, Kay Boycott, stated: "Unfortunately relationships do break down which is painful enough, but being forced to carry on living with an ex-partner, even for a short time, must add real pressure to the situation."

Shelter, which was formed in 1966 by the Reverend Bruce Kenrick, has urged the political parties to make affordable housing a priority.
