Small business owners 'need government support to expand'
Posted by Craig Williams
Owners of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK need to be given more help from the government if they are to maximise their profitability in the aftermath of the global economic downturn.
That is the view of a spokeswoman for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), who has said that SMEs require greater levels of assistance in order to capitalise on the "good potential" for expansion offered by the international market.
Recently, HSBC's Global Small Business Confidence Monitor showed that 20 per cent of such organisations in Britain are now trading overseas, which is lower than the 29 per cent figure posted for these companies worldwide.
The FSB official stated that UK SMEs are eager to take their share of this sector following the recession, but added that this is proving difficult because there is too much "red tape and bureaucracy" from the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance restricting them.
