British mothers may not be benefiting from full maternity leave as many have to return to work sooner than planned due to financial pressure.

That is the finding of a study by uSwitch.com, which revealed nine per cent of new mums are cutting their leave short so they can make ends meet.

With typical net household income dropping by around a third during maternity leave and 90 per cent of this money being spent on the new arrival, the research highlighted the financial constraints faced by many families.

Indeed, more than 40 per cent of mums reported ending up in debt after having a baby.

Consumer policy director at the price comparison site Ann Robinson remarked: "Despite women being told that they can 'have it all' and can choose whether to be a working or stay-at-home mum, the fact is that most have this choice stripped away from them."

Michelle Singleton of Unison recently criticised the government's failure to pledge to add to paternity leave.
