Speed cameras are not there to create revenue but rather to improve road safety, it has been claimed.

Commenting on the issue, a spokesperson for the Department for Transport said that fewer deaths occur as a result of such cameras.

She made her comments after the Institute of Advanced Motorists suggested that public attitudes towards safety cameras are deteriorating.

In response, the government spokesperson said: "Safety cameras are there to save lives, not make money. Independent research has shown there are 1,745 fewer deaths and serious injuries at camera sites each year."

She went on to say that the government is clear that the best speed cameras are ones ADNFCR-2353-ID-19302575-ADNFCR
