Stafford Hospital case could see doctors and nurses fired

As a public inquiry continues into the Stafford Hospital scandal - where some 1,200 patients may have needlessly died as chiefs tried to hit targets and cut costs - 57 medical professionals have been singled out, with 30 possibly facing being struck off as a result of their conduct.

Last year, it was found that "chaotic" and "appalling" conditions meant hundreds more people died than was expected between 2005 and 2008, with decisions regarding treatment for Accident and Emergency cases left to receptionists and dehydrated patients forced to drink from flower vases, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Consequently, almost 100 bereaved victims and relatives will be paid over £1 million in compensation and now 29 nurses are being investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, with 28 doctors, including at least eight consultants, having been referred to the General Medical Council.

This comes after the Bristol Evening Post reported that two patients were awarded millions of pounds in compensation after complications during heart surgery operations resulted in cognitive and behavioural problems.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800238310-ADNFCR
