Staycations are set to become increasingly popular among Britons throughout 2012 due to the rising cost of air travel.

That is the view of Linsey McNeill, freelance travel writer, who believes the combination of the Air Passenger Duty (APD) hike and soaring fuel prices will lead to a larger number of families staying on these shores for their holiday this year.

It was revealed last week (January 26th) that APD will go up by eight per cent in April 2012 - a hike that will affect all passengers departing from airports across the country.

And, with this in mind, Ms McNeill explained that it is "safe to say the UK will certainly do very well this year for holidays" on the basis that "flying will become unaffordable" for a lot of people, meaning they will have to explore other options.

"It's due to taxes as much as the fact that people are earning less," she added. ADNFCR-2353-ID-801279406-ADNFCR
