The storms that have battered much of the UK over the first weeks of the new year have led to a significant rise in car insurance claims across the country, new figures have shown.

According to data published by the AA yesterday (January 9th), the equivalent of more than 1,100 weather-related claims were lodged daily throughout the opening five days of the month.

This represents a climb of 28 per cent on the number recorded in 2011 and the company has attributed this mainly to the inclement conditions suffered by much of the country.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said the most common cause of damage to vehicles were trees, branches and dislodged roof tiles.

"Several customers also had their car door whipped out of their hand by a gust of wind, breaking hinge mechanisms, smashing glass or damaging a vehicle parked in the next space," he added.

Recently, Kevin Clinton of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents urged motorists to regularly brush up on their driving skills after passing their test. ADNFCR-2353-ID-801260120-ADNFCR
