Those looking to obtain an insurance deal this year might have noted news that students typically take almost £4,000 worth of possessions to university.

According to Endsleigh, a third of these items will be carried around campus and central areas, amounting to a value of £1,300.

Those heading to their lecture halls with a laptop, mobile phone and mp3 player, and wearing averagely-priced clothes, have the aforementioned sum on their person.

Furthermore, the data showed that 94 per cent of students polled will be taking a laptop to their new academic institution, with the remaining six per cent possessing a desktop computer.

Vicki O'Connell, spokeswoman for the group, said: "Our research shows just how easily the value of your possessions accumulates."

The organisation asserts that learners should raise any security concerns with their halls of residence officials.

Recently, NFU Mutual noted that quad bikes, power tools and Land Rovers are among the valuables increasingly being stolen from rural areas.
