More than one million motorists in the UK are putting themselves in danger of receiving a hefty fine for having an expired photo on their driving license.
That is according to data revealed today (January 3rd) in a freedom of information request from Sainsbury's, which established that 1.6 million people have an old picture on their document, while a further 2.9 million must renew theirs in 2012.
A large proportion of road users - 41 per cent - indicated they are unaware of the fact that having an outdated photo on their license can be punished with a penalty of £1,000.
Under the law, drivers must update their picture every ten years regardless of whether or not they are active motorists.
Ben Tyte, head of car insurance at Sainsbury's, commented: "We would encourage all drivers to check when their photo card was issued."
Recently, Steve Chilton of the Swinton Group urged young drivers to avoid the temptation of saving cash by not taking out car cover.
