Tax incentives plans for married couples 'may not be feasible'
Posted by Emily Jones
Proposals under which married couples would have received tax incentives may not be possible, the political party behind the suggestions has admitted.
Recently, the Conservatives announced they were considering implementing such financial measures if they were to come to power following the next general election as a way of promoting the institution.
However, shadow chief secretary to the treasury Philip Hammond has now told the BBC that any tax breaks may have to be more limited than was first thought.
It may be the case that the Tories' intention to bring in a transferable tax allowance is not financially viable given the country's economic situation, the politician said.
The party will therefore look into alternative suggestions, he added.
According to fellow Conservative David Willetts, shadow cabinet member responsible for the family, more must be done to encourage marriage as it is in danger of becoming a middle-class phenomenon due to the costs and difficulties involved.
