Ten-year high for older workers in unemployment

Ylr-news-800021906

News that the number of older workers in unemployment has reached a ten-year high might interest those seeking legal advice for discrimination issues.

According to Age UK, the volume of such individuals who are out of work has gone up by more than 50 per cent in the last year.

The group revealed that two in five over-50s have been without a job for more than a year.

In total, this amounts to 170,000 people.

Michelle Mitchell, charity director at the organisation, stated: "This is the highest level of long-term unemployment among over-50s that we have seen in a decade."

She added that it is a reminder of the previous two recessions, "which left a devastating legacy of unemployment among people in later life".

Recently, the Bank of England decided to keep the current level of interest rates untouched, which may help jobseekers in the long-term by improving economic conditions.
