Tenancy deposit legislation 'working'

Legislation designed to protect deposits handed over by tenants is working, it has been claimed.

According to David Salusbury, chairman of the National Landlords Association (NLA), the system is good, despite recent concerns over cost increases.

He suggested that the industry should be careful not to let current discussions over the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) rises detract from the principal purpose of the initiative - which is to offer legal protection to tenants from having their money wrongly withheld.

Mr Salusbury added: "The NLA welcomes recent comments from the government that it is happy with the performance and high standards demonstrated by the approved tenancy deposit protection schemes."

He went on to say that the TDS has proven to be a success and current issues should not take away from this.

The TDS was established under the Housing Act 2004 and it is supposed to protect the deposits of people renting properties throughout their tenancies.
