Tenants and landlords 'will benefit from green loan plans'

Proposals for so-called 'green loans' will benefit both tenants and landlords in the UK, it has been claimed.

Under the terms of the plans, people will be able to borrow money to fund the upfront costs of eco-upgrades.

Rather than paying for the work immediately, they will take out long-term loans, with repayments calculated on a pay-as-you-save mechanism based on reductions to their energy bills.

Examples of work that will be done to residences include the installation of heat pumps and solar panels, as well as solid wall insulation.

Responding to the measures, the National Landlords Association said they are welcome.

Its policy offer Chris Norris commented: "It is reassuring that these proposals will be available across all types of tenure."

He added that it is hoped the measures will remove some of the barriers that exist in the UK to making accommodation less damaging to the environment.

Mr Norris claimed that privately rented property tends to be older and harder to make more energy efficient.
