Tenants 'ignoring EPCs'
The energy performance certificates (EPCs) now required by law under most tenancies in England and Wales are being ignored by most tenants, it has been claimed.
Such certificates detail the energy efficiency of properties, grading them from A to G, with A being the most efficient.
According to the National Landlords Association (NLA), EPCs do not feature among most tenants' considerations when they are selecting a place to rent.
Director of the organisation Sussanne Chambers said: "It seems many landlords are left wondering about the effectiveness of an EPC.
"What has become apparent is that tenants don't seem to be interested in them, or use them as a deciding factor in choosing a rental property."
The NLA claimed that the average efficiency grade is currently D.
Representing more than 17,000 fee-paying members, the NLA is headquartered in London and it employs over 40 members of staff.
It seeks to achieve a fair legal and regulatory environment for landlords and tenants.
