Tenants 'lacking awareness of deposit protection'
Tenants in UK lack knowledge of deposit protection, it has been suggested.
According to Eddie Hooker, chief executive of mydeposits.co.uk, people who rent properties are still "clueless" concerning the issue.
Some tenants remain completely unaware that tenancy deposit protection laws exist, he claimed.
Mr Hooker said: "If a deposit is never protected, the tenant has to rely on landlords' goodwill to have their cash returned."
When a deposit is protected, the person renting the property has the chance to raise a dispute at the end of the tenancy if they believe their landlord has unfairly withheld it, the expert added.
He went on to point out that such protection also gives tenants access to free and impartial dispute resolution.
Mr Hooker concluded by advising anyone who is in doubt concerning the issue to contact their landlord or letting agent immediately.
Tenancy protection schemes enable tenants to get all or part of their deposit back when they are entitled to it.
