Tory party's civil partnership plans "an afterthought"
Posted by Mark Cunningham
Plans announced recently by the Conservative Party concerning gay rights have been described by one man as an "afterthought".
Speaking to PinkNews.co.uk, gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell suggested that proposals set out to the publication by David Cameron concerning recognising civil partnerships, quashing convictions for homosexuality and adopting a "zero tolerance" approach to homophobic bullying have not been thought through.
He said: "Until just over a week ago, Cameron had no gay rights policies."
Following this, he suggested, the party's leaders began announcing a series of polices which appear to have been a "knee-jerk reaction" to criticism.
The fact that the plans do not appear in the Conservative election manifesto is evidence of this, he claimed.
Last night (April 15th), Mr Cameron took part in a debate alongside Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg as part of the pre-election campaign.
The contest is due to be fought on May 6th and opinion polls differ as to which party will come out on top.
