Travel insurance policies 'may not cover children'

People heading on holiday with their children may need to check to see that all those on the vacation are covered.

According to research firm Defaqto, certain insurance policies may be out-of-date in terms of how they classify family relationships.

Nearly one in three (28 per cent) do not cover youngsters if they live with an ex-partner, it revealed.

Insurance providers tend to only consider children to be family if they reside permanently at the address of the person taking them on the trip, the organisation noted.

Defaqto's Brian Brown remarked: "If you take children on holiday with you and they normally live with an ex-partner they might not be covered."

He added that those who are particularly at risk of lacking insurance include couples who are not married and those who have offspring from a previous relationship.

Travel insurance may be especially necessary at present due to the intermittent disruption to flights in various parts of Europe caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
