TUC: Low-paid workers have endured poor pay increases
Posted by Helen Jones
People in low and medium-paid jobs have seen their median incomes grow at a slow pace over recent decades, new research has shown.
According to a study published on Monday (June 6th) by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), wages for such workers went up by 27 per cent and 56 per cent during the 30 years preceding the onset of the global financial downturn.
This is despite the fact that the country's economy has expanded by more than 100 per cent in the same period, which the TUC claims is indicative that a "livelihood crisis" has been brewing in the UK for many years.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the body, commented: "Britain has got much wealthier over the last three decades ... [but] the financial crash has exposed decades of limp wage growth, offset by soaring household debt."
Recently, Income Data Services showed that many private sector employees will see their wages go up at some point in 2011.
