TUC welcomes commitments over minimum wage

An industry body has welcomed a commitment made by the Labour Party in its recent manifesto.

In the run-up to the impending general election - which will take place on May 6th - the organisation revealed it intends to give the independent Low Pay Commission (LPC) a broader remit in fighting poverty pay.

Responding to the decision, TUC general secretary Brendan Barber remarked: "While the commission must continue to make its recommendations on the evidence available, it is good to rule out letting the minimum wage fall behind the growth of average earnings."

He added that the minimum wage must never be allowed to "wither on the vine".

If this occurred, low-paying employers would get away with shirking their responsibilities and would abandon staff members who receive poor levels of remuneration.

According to Mr Barber, the LPC has been successful in performing its role since its establishment and it would be a good move to provide it with additional responsibilities.
