TUC welcomes legal decision concerning civil partnerships

Ylr-news-19516453

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has described a new legal development involving civil partnerships as positive.

Recently, the Court of Appeal ruled against a Christian registrar who refused to officiate at such ceremonies.

Initially, Lillian Ladele won her claim that she had been discriminated against because of her religious beliefs. However, this has now been overruled.

In response to the move by the Court of Appeal, the TUC said it is good news for those who believe in equality.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the organisation - which has roots tracing back over 130 years - said lesbian and gay people should be treated in the same way as other people.

He went on to state: "No one is allowed to pick and choose whether to provide a service to someone because of their race or gender - so why should they be allowed to do so on the grounds of sexuality?"
