UK's gender pay gap 'must be addressed'

News-no-image-original

The gender pay gap in the UK is narrowing, but remains at an unacceptably high level.

That is the observation made by Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, following the publication of Office for National Statistics data.

In terms of part-time employment, the gap between the genders is more than 35 per cent, he explained, suggesting that women will be "shocked" by that fact.

Mr Barber said that British females are having to sacrifice good wages in order to balance work and family, calling for the government to tackle the discrimination seen in pay systems.

"It shouldn't require a recession to make inroads into the gender pay gap," he remarked. "Employers are not going to close the pay gap of their own accord."

Last week, Unison found that bullying is a growing problem in the workplace, with one-third of people polled having experienced such maltreatment in the last six months - double the level of 12 years ago.
