Volunteering 'increases long-term employment prospects'
Posted by Patrick White
Younger people can help improve their employment prospects as well as enhancing their personal skill-set by volunteering.
That is the opinion of Becci Newton, senior research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, who has said that completing work for no pay can help individuals develop their leadership abilities.
This will then lead to them becoming more attractive to prospective employers due to the impressive edge it will add to their CVs, as it shows they have first-hand experience of the world of work.
Recent research by Allen & Overy revealed 88 per cent of all people between the ages of 16 and 18 have done some form of work experience.
However, Ms Newton explained companies are likely to see volunteering as a more attractive quality in a potential employee as it gives youngsters "a greater opportunity" to hone their talent "because they are able to devise to a greater extent or suggest their own projects that they might take forward".
