A vote in the House of Lords has gone in favour of an amendment to the equality bill concerning civil partnerships.

Under the terms of the changes, such unions will be allowed to take place in religious venues.

While churches and other holy places will be able to conduct the partnerships, they will not be forced to but rather will have a choice.

The move has been welcomed by Chris Campbell, an elder at Maidenhead United Reform Church, who said it was "fantastic", the BBC reports.

He added: "All churches need to start having prayerful discussions before deciding a way forward that's right for them."

Mr Cambell, who is himself in a same-sex relationship, revealed he is now considering a civil partnership.

Introduced by the Labour administration, the unions are designed to provide gay couples with equal rights to straight married pairs in respect to certain things, including employment benefits.
