Whistleblower wins employment tribunal
Posted by Richard Saunders
A whistleblower who took the University of Gloucestershire to court has won her employment tribunal after she was given an ultimatum to transfer departments.
Janet Merrigan claimed that budgets were being spent on consultancy fees and overseas travel, while voicing other concerns regarding excessive staff pay, which resulted in her being excluded from meetings and otherwise sidelined in her position.
The four-day tribunal, held in Bristol, saw the higher education facility ordered to pay £6,000 for injury to feelings.
"I am delighted I have won, but most importantly that my concerns were taken seriously," Ms Merrigan remarked. "We need an open and transparent culture, where staff can speak out on issues of public interest."
The case comes after Ofsted issued guidance for whistleblowers, setting up a hotline for frontline staff in children's services to allow them to call attention to any serious concerns regarding practice, although the body suggests reading an employer's whistleblowing policy prior to contacting it.
