Why stricter broadband advertising rules might benefit consumers

Those looking to get an accurate indication of their broadband performance might agree with an expert's comments regarding the importance of transparency when it comes to advertising.

According to Richard Patterson, spokesperson for broadband-expert.co.uk, there is pressure for internet service providers (ISPs) to promote faster speeds, even if these do not bear sufficient resemblance to reality.

He claimed that recent reforms suggested by Ofcom "would go a long way to resolving the issue".

"If some ISPs do not sign up to the voluntary code then further regulation would be required if consumers' rights are to be protected," Mr Patterson observed.

Specifically, he said that giving people the chance to cancel their contracts if connection speeds to do not come up to scratch may be a good idea.

According to Ofcom, many copper wires originally intended for telephone use are being adopted by broadband providers, which can lead to slower web access for many users.ADNFCR-2353-ID-19913196-ADNFCR
