The expectations of employers concerning the working hours of staff members need to be changed in order to help women make the most of opportunities at work, it has been claimed.

According to Vera Baird, solicitor general and lead minister for the equality bill, the so-called '40-40-40' model under which people are in their offices for 40 hours or more a week, for 40-plus weeks a year over a career lasting at least four decades needs to go.

She suggested that this would benefit women as they still have the majority of the caring responsibilities at home.

Ms Baird, who assumed her current role in December 2008 - added: "It is also good for men who share in caring and for businesses that will benefit more fully from a wider pool of talent."

Failing to open up more senior positions to part-time workers means firms are "missing a trick", the politician went on to state.
