Work-life boundaries 'becoming less clear'
Posted by Emily Swanson
Distinctions between the time people spend in work and at home are becoming increasingly blurred in the 21st century.
That is according to Dr Clare Kelliher, senior lecturer in strategic human resource management at the Cranfield School of Management, who believes the dividing line between Britons' professional and personal lives is less rgidly defined than ever before.
Recently, the latest Labour Force Survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics revealed that employees in the UK are now putting in fewer hours per week at work than they were in 1992.
Dr Cranfield explained that this does not necessarily mean people are working less, but indicates that technological advances such as smartphones are allowing people to operate outside regular hours more easily.
"With various communication technologies, work doesn't tend to start at the workplace and finish when they leave," she added.
Indeed, she went on to say that many jobs have actually become "more intense" in recent years.
