Commercial landlords still need to improve basic standards of property management, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has claimed.

The newly-published Occupier Satisfaction Survey 2010 from the Property Industry Alliance and CoreNet Global shows that some improvements in this field have been felt by commercial tenants over the past 12 months.

Nevertheless, noting that the paper also shows that just three per cent of tenants feel that the process for obtaining consent for possible alterations to a property has become easier over the past year, the BRC has stated that basic standards need to improve in this and other key areas.

"The results clearly indicate that greater consistency in basic property management is needed across the entire sector," explained the organisation's head of property, Elizabeth Hinde.

She added that lease negotiations and service charge management processes also need improving over the coming year.

At the same time, moneysupermarket.com has reported that growing numbers of Britons are becoming 'reluctant landlords' as they rent out second homes in order to cope with the economic downturn.
