Worker sustains serious arm injuries during accident
Posted by Daniel Stevens
An employee of a steel fabricating company has sustained serious injuries to his arm and hand during an accident at work.
Ian Sutherland required surgery and the insertion of a six-inch metal plate in to his right arm after it was crushed by a metal object weighing more than two tonnes following an incident in August 2009 at Edinburgh-based company Forth Steel, which is a subsidiary of Murray International Holdings.
During the accident, Mr Sutherland was working alongside a colleague to identify the newly-delivered sheets, which were suspended 18 inches in the air by a crane operator.
This then malfunctioned as the employee and his counterpart operated, resulting in Mr Sutherland sustaining these health problems, from which he still suffers discomfort.
One month before this incident, the Health and Safety Executive had told Forth to install proper equipment to lift the plates in order to avoid such accidents from taking place.
