Employees across the UK spend the equivalent of five weeks extra at work every year simply travelling to and from their job, new research has shown.

According to a study conducted by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) - a body with more than six million members - the average annual commute time faced by professionals across the country is 200 hours.

The survey also established that men spend some 26 per cent more time travelling to their place of work than their female colleagues, with individuals of both sexes in London enduring the longest average journeys nationwide of 37.8 minutes each way.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, noted these figures are a clear indication that "smarter working must be part of the economy" in terms of people being offered better options.

"Unnecessary long commutes are frustrating and expensive for staff and bad for business too," he added.ADNFCR-2353-ID-801211760-ADNFCR
