Workers have 'unrealistic expectations' about new roles
Posted by Chris Stevenson
Employees in the process of moving careers from the public arena to the private sector often need to re-evaluate their hopes and expectations for their new role, it has been said.
Following the recession, many professionals operating in the public market have either been made redundant or had to accept pay cuts, meaning a lot of people have decided to move into the private sector instead.
However, according to Marcus Alexander, managing director of Appleby Associates, the majority of such professionals tend to harbour "unrealistic expectations" with regard to their prospects.
Mr Alexander noted that many "think they're going to get the same as the public sector" in terms of wages and bonuses, but it is advisable to "step back and go 'actually, is this really going to be the case?'".
Last week (July 27th), the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development revealed that the primary motivation to switch careers for people is now the desire to enjoy higher wages and benefits.
